Labour wins as first votes come in

The first vote count is in and it’s a win for Labour.

Newcastle Upon Tyne is the first constituency to announce the vote count with a Labour majority of 21,568 votes for incumbent MP Chi Onwurah.

The result was followed closely by Houghton and Sunderland South, with another win for Labour candidate Bridget Phillipson.

Despite the early Labour wins, the Conservative party is expected to have a 50-seat majority in the House of Commons.

Meanwhile, Blyth Valley announced that Ian Levy would hold a seat as the first ever Conservative MP in the region.
